Winter at the beach in Kintyre

Mention heading to the beach in winter and we guarantee you'll get some strange looks! However swapping beachballs and flip flops for kites and wellies might be the best day out you spend in a long time.

Kintyre has some of the best beaches in Scotland. Surfing paradise Westport, which attracts thousands of visitors (and their surf boards) every summer, is also one of the best places to walk your dog. While your four legged friend runs in and out of the Atlantic ocean surf, the kids can be sliding down sand dunes or trying to fly a kite. With more than six miles of golden sand, to play on a trip to Westport will tire out even the most energetic child or pooch!

But if you don't fancy walking on the sand then head to one of the hotels and holiday parks which hug the coast. Bellochantuy Beach is open all year round, and with double glazed and centrally heated holiday homes, just footsteps from the sand, it's a great spot to escape to. You're also next door to the Argyll Hotel, great for when you want to eat out, but with their conservatory dining room right on the beach, there's plenty of opportunity to indulge a love of the night sky. Kintyre is an area known for it's dark skies, and if you've a passion for stargazing then this is definitely the place to be!

This winter do something different and head to the coast – you'll be delighted you did.
