Fiona McPhail and Derek Andrews

Modern life has us moving so quickly that, all too often, it’s easy to miss things as the world races by. Sometimes it pays to stop. And look. And listen.

That’s exactly what Fiona and Derek did, when they made the decision to move their family to Carry Farm and take over the Tighnabruaich Sailing School, the oldest, privately run, coastal sailing school in Scotland.

Fiona and Derek unashamedly name Carry Farm as their favourite spot on the Secret Coast and, with its own beach for swimming, a sheltered bay for sailing, breathtaking coastal views, and sixty acres of wilderness to explore, it’s not difficult to understand why.

But choosing the slow lane does not mean standing still. As well as providing quality, individually-tailored sailing tuition, Fiona and Derek have carefully grown Carry Farm to include architect-designed holiday lodges, a loch-side campsite, a tannery and the Hayshed gallery space, as well as providing space for other locally-owned businesses to grow and thrive.

Fiona best describes the philosophy behind Carry Farm when asked what advice she would give to visitors to Argyll’s Secret Coast.

“Don’t plan too much. Go with the flow and enjoy a slow adventure. Open the curtains, fling open the doors, switch off your technology and immerse yourself in the wild world going by.”

Isn’t it time you enjoyed life in the slow lane?
