At the southern end of Kintyre, close to Southend, you can explore a number of fascinating historic sites. Discover Keil Caves, which were occupied for centuries. Nearby you'll find St Columba's Chapel, St Columba's Well and St Columba's Footprints, which are carved in stone, a reminder that this is where he landed in Scotland in 563. Cross Southend Beach and you can clamber up the rock of Dunaverty, which was once the site of an important castle and witnessed a horrific massacre in 1647. There's a parking area, where signs point you in one direction to the caves and in the other direction up a set of stone steps onto the outcrop carrying the footprints.
