Toward Castle

Toward Castle

Toward Castle consists of a ruined 15th century tower and a ruined 16th century courtyard with an arched gateway.

The Castle was owned by Clam Lamont (one of the most powerful families in the history of West Scotland) and Mary Queen of Scots visited in 1563. In 1646 the Campbells bombarded and burnt down the Castle. This is said to have been in retaliation for the Lamonts killing many Campbells at the sacking of Kilmun. You can still see the plot and parts of the original buildings, including the archway and some underground rooms. It is located about 7 miles South-West of Dunoon, in Toward and the walking entrance is through a path in the wall of the current stately home on the estate lane, named Castle Toward.
