The summer holidays are in full swing! With great beaches, a fascinating history and outdoor activities galore, Argyll & The Isles is the perfect place for a family holiday. What’s more there are loads of great events taking place across the region this summer, from music festivals to sporting events. Most of these are family friendly and make for a great day out during the summer holidays. Here are our top nine events that kids will enjoy this summer in Argyll.
Carradale Harbour Day – 20th July
Kick off the summer holiday fun at Carradale Harbour Day. It’s a stunning location on the beautiful east coast of Kintyre. Enjoy a day of pirate-themed frolics, with a busking stage, children’s stalls, BBQ, RNLI stall and more. For adults, there’s a craft ale bar featuring Fyne Ales and a gin bar featuring Kintyre Gin. You can also have your fortune told! It starts at 12 noon. While you’re in the area, don’t miss Carradale Beach. It’s a huge stretch of sand that kids of all ages will love.
Tarbert Traditional Boat Festival, 21st & 22nd July
Tarbert is famous for its fishing heritage and every year the village celebrates with the Traditional Boat Festival. As well as checking out all the fabulous boats, there’s plenty of shoreside activities on the Saturday with woodwork demos, stalls and music. On Sunday you can watch all the boats sail out Tarbert Harbour before returning home.
West Highland Yachting Week, 26th July to 2nd August
For older kids with an interest in sailing, West Highland Yachting Week is unbeatable. The ethos at the heart of this event is participation and fun for all. The programme offers round-the-buoys and passage racing, so there’s something for everyone. It’s a great opportunity for family sailing. The yachts make for a magnificent sight and there are great vantage points from which to watch the racing. Plus there are lots of land-based celebrations to enjoy, including BBQs and fireworks.
ButeFest, 26th to 28th July
If you’re looking for a family-friendly music festival this summer, ButeFest is for you! It’s a fabulous weekend of music, food and fun on the Isle of Bute that’s totally kid friendly. There’s plenty for young ones to do and the festival site is right next to Ettrick Bay, a lovely sandy beach – what more could kids want?
Seil Scarecrow Festival, 27th July to 3rd August
Don’t miss the first ever Seil Scarecrow Festival when the scarecrows will take over the island! Follow the two scarecrow trails, one across the island and the other in Ellenabeich, and choose your favourite. There are lots of other activities during the week, including nature and heritage walks, sea trips, friendly football matches, a tug-o-war, a tattie bogle dance and the revival of the island's bygone Highland fair. It all starts on Saturday July 27 with an opening ceremony at the Atlantic Bridge with live music, games, face painting and food.
Colintraive Village Fete, 3rd August
Head to Colintraive on Argyll’s Secret Coast for this lovely community event. It includes all the family favourites, including games, a dog show, BBQ, ice creams, teas and coffees, home baking, road and hill races, baking competitions and a ‘duck race’ along the burn which leads through the village.
Islay, Jura and Colonsay Show, 8th August
This Agricultural Show in Bridgend on the beautiful island of Islay makes for a fantastic family day out. Kids will love seeing all the farm animals, and there are children’s games, stalls and food.
Tobermory Lifeboat Day, 11th August
Enjoy a day of fun and frolics at the Tobermory RNLI Lifeboat Day on Mull. Meet the Tobermory Lifeboat crew and explore a lifeboat, take part in a raft race and enjoy stalls and games. It all starts at midday.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Hill House, 14th August
And to round off the summer, enjoy an evening of summer garden theatre. Chapterhouse Theatre Company presents Shakespeare's best-loved romantic comedy in the gardens of Hill House in Helensburgh. Beautifully designed Elizabethan costumes, a wonderful musical score and enchanting woodland creatures come together to make this an evening that kids will love. Under 5s are free.
