1. Tyndrum’s Turbulent History

Although today it’s best known as a stopping point for walkers and travellers, Tyndrum has a fascinating history. In 1306, the Clan MacDougall famously defeated Robert the Bruce during the 'Battle of Dalrigh' just outside the village, where they took his Brooch of Lorn from him. This Brooch is still in the possession of the Clan today. When defeat was looming, Robert the Bruce and his army fled into the hills, throwing any unwieldy heavy arms into a small lochan to speed their escape. Legend has it that the King's sword still lies beneath the surface of the lochan.

Later, Tyndrum became a mining hub, with lead and gold discovered in the surrounding hills. In fact, Scotland’s only gold mine, Cononish, operated near Tyndrum until 2023, producing gold used in Scottish jewellery. Plans are in place to reopen the gold mine in the future.

2. Walk the West Highland Way

Tyndrum is a key stop on the West Highland Way, Scotland’s most famous long-distance walking route. Even if you don’t have time to tackle the whole 96 miles (154 km), you can head on a section of the trek from Tyndrum. A popular option is the section south towards Crianlarich, offering beautiful forested paths and mountain views.

Heading north towards Bridge of Orchy offers wide-open landscapes and a real sense of Highland wilderness. With trains and buses linking back to Glasgow, it’s an accessible way to enjoy one of Scotland’s best-loved trails.

3. Try White-Water Rafting on the River Orchy

For adrenaline seekers, Tyndrum is a fantastic base for outdoor activities. The River Orchy offers some of the best rafting in the UK, with raging torrents during the winter months. It is highly recommended that you book a tour with a certified rafting provider, as this river is a serious undertaking!

Local adventure companies also offer canyoning, kayaking, and rafting near Tyndrum.

4. Visit the Famous Green Welly Stop

No guide to Tyndrum would be complete without mentioning the Green Welly Stop! More than just a service stop, it’s a local institution.
