Rich Whisky Heritage

Argyll & the Isles has centuries of whisky history. Bowmore dates to 1779, Tobermory to 1798, and Campbeltown became a major centre of Scotch whisky production during the Victorian era. Distilleries across the region produce a wide range of styles, from unpeated and lightly peated malts to smoky, heavily peated whiskies.

World-Class Distilleries

The region has 18 working whisky distilleries. Islay has 11, including Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Port Ellen and the new Laggan Bay Distillery. Islay is famous for peated whisky, but its distilleries also produce notable unpeated styles.

Campbeltown’s three established distilleries are Springbank, Glen Scotia and Mitchell’s Glengyle, home of Kilkerran single malt. You will also find distilleries in Oban, Mull, Jura and Tiree, each with its own history and character.

Whisky Tours and Tastings

Many distilleries offer guided tours and tastings. Experiences vary, so check opening dates, age restrictions, accessibility and booking requirements directly with each distillery.

On Islay, the 5.5 km Three Distilleries Pathway runs from Port Ellen to Ardbeg, passing Laphroaig and Lagavulin. Specialist tastings include the Warehouse 9 experience at Bunnahabhain and Warehouse No. 3 experiences at Lagavulin, subject to availability.

Coast and Islands

Whisky trips combine distillery visits with Argyll’s coast, beaches and lochs. Islay and Jura are linked by the council ferry between Port Askaig and Feolin. Mull requires a separate journey and is most directly reached by ferry from Oban. Always check ferry timetables and service updates before travelling.

History and Local Food

You can combine a whisky trip with visits to the prehistoric monuments of Kilmartin Glen and historic attractions such as Inveraray Castle and Inveraray Jail. Argyll’s seafood and other local produce also pair well with the region’s whiskies.
