Sit back and enjoy the scenery as you travel through Mull to Fionnphort, before heading out to discover Staffa’s remarkable rock formations and Iona’s historic sites. There’s time to explore Staffa and Iona, although sailings and landings depend on sea and weather conditions.

Discover Mull, Iona and Staffa

Mull

For many visitors to the west coast of Scotland, a trip to Mull is a highlight of their holiday. This wonderful island has great beaches, magnificent castles and a vibrant cultural life. If you love getting active in the great outdoors, you’re in for a treat on Mull, with walking, cycling and kayaking on offer.

On the Three Isles Tour, you’ll enjoy the island’s scenery from the coach as you travel from Craignure through Glen More to Fionnphort. It’s a lovely introduction to Mull, and may well leave you planning a return visit.

If you’re staying longer, head to Tobermory, where brightly painted houses cluster around a sheltered bay, for a spot of shopping and eating. You could also visit Duart Castle, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Sound of Mull, or tackle Ben More, the island’s only Munro, for wonderful views across the surrounding islands.

Iona

Dreamy Iona sits off the south-western tip of Mull. The ferry from Fionnphort on Mull to Iona takes just 10 minutes. Visitors normally cross as foot passengers, as vehicles need a permit to travel to the island.

At around 1.5 miles wide and 3 miles long, Iona is a lovely place to explore on foot, with beautiful bays, panoramic views and historic sites. It became an important centre of Christian worship after St Columba arrived in AD 563, and its long tradition of pilgrimage continues today.

Iona Abbey, a short walk from the ferry landing, is one of the island’s highlights. St Columba founded a monastery here in AD 563, while the Benedictine abbey followed around 1200. Explore the restored abbey church and nearby Augustinian nunnery, or simply take time to enjoy the island’s peaceful atmosphere.

If you’re visiting on a day tour, keep an eye on your departure time and save longer island walks for a more leisurely visit. Check Iona Abbey’s opening and ticket information before travelling.

Staffa

Staffa lies off the west coast of Mull. There isn’t a scheduled public ferry service, but boat tours offer the chance to discover this dramatic, uninhabited island, best known for its magnificent basalt columns and spectacular sea caves.

When sea conditions allow, you can go ashore to see the famous Fingal’s Cave, which inspired Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture. The towering rock columns and sound of the sea make this a memorable part of an island-hopping adventure.

Boat trips to Staffa depart from several places, including Fionnphort and Ulva Ferry on Mull, as well as Iona. Choose a departure point that fits your itinerary, and remember that landing on Staffa is always weather dependent.

Planning Your Island-Hopping Trip

An organised tour brings the different stages of the journey together, making it a convenient way to visit all three islands from Oban. If you’re travelling independently, check ferry, bus and boat connections carefully, including your return journey.

Check tour availability and book ahead where required. For ferry journeys, use the latest CalMac timetables and service information, as sailings can change.

Sea and weather conditions may affect your itinerary, particularly boat trips and landings on Staffa. Bring waterproofs, warm layers and sturdy footwear, along with food and refreshments for the day.

If you have mobility requirements, speak to the tour operator before booking. Landing on Staffa may not be suitable for everyone, and the operator can explain the arrangements.

Staying Longer? Visit Ulva

If you have more time on Mull, plan a visit to Ulva. The little foot-passenger ferry runs on demand during operating hours – you summon it by uncovering the red panel on the sign beside the pier. It’s a charming start to another island adventure during a longer stay.

Check the current Ulva ferry arrangements before travelling, as operating days vary and sailings are weather dependent. There’s no need to book the ferry, but if you’re using public transport, check the West Coast Motors service to Salen and arrange onward travel with Ulva Ferry Community Transport in advance.
