Argyll & the Isles Produce To TryOur small, local producers work closely with the land and sea to produce top-notch food that is as fresh as it gets, prepared with love in our fabulous West Coast eateries. Here are some of the must-try produce whilst exploring Argyll & the Isles:
- Seafood: Argyll's Atlantic waters and sea lochs are home to some of Scotland's best seafood. Enjoy oysters with sweeping views over Loch Fyne or sample langoustines, scallops, mussels, and smoked salmon freshly landed each day in Oban, Scotland’s Seafood Capital.
- Smokehouses: While our smokeries are probably best known for their salmon, they also produce Loch Fyne kippers, trout, seafood, meat, game, cheese, pates, and even trout and lumpfish caviars.
- Meat & Game: From delicious Adfern Black Pudding to the finest venison from the Winston Churchill Venison Company, pick up some superior quality meat to try at home.

Keren runs Sorcha Bakery from her home in Argyll’s stunning Scammadale Glen and welcomes customers to her shop in Oban every Friday and Saturday. Vegan and dairy-free, this “boutique micro-bakery” whose name means “light and radiant” in Gaelic, has become a magnet for locals and tourists, with Keren’s bespoke celebration cakes sought after by customers from all over Scotland.
“It works really well, there is a nice feel to it,” says Keren. “It was always important to me that it was a vegan bakery, to open people’s eyes to the fact that you can have delicious, tasty bakes without causing harm to animals. We’ve had a great response from people, it’s been lovely.” Location is everything, adds Keren.
“I love using the landscape around us,” she says. “We forage for seasonal berries and fruit, and for decorations for our celebration cakes. “I love living here, it’s really inspirational for me to be so close to the sea, the mountains, the heather. It’s good for the soul.”

Meet our producer
Jane runs Highland Fold from Achinreir farm in Barcaldine, in north Argyll, where she keeps and milks the cows, grows and harvests fruit and herbs, and makes delicious ice cream along with home-made trimmings, baking, puddings and drinks in the Garden and Barn cafe.
Its signature Highlander gelato is made with milk from the farm’s own Highland Cows.
For a rare treat, once a year, visitors can even help to harvest meadowsweet, the delicious edible herb Jane often uses to make flavoured sugar for the ice cream, in place of vanilla.
“We make everything from scratch and try to source as many ingredients as possible from the farm or from our neighbours and other local businesses,” says Jane.
JANE GREY, HIGHFOLD ICECREAM
It was while on a fishing trip in the middle of beautiful Loch Craignish that fellow chefs and food-lovers Derek Muircroft and Rob FitzPatrick came up with the idea for Ardfern Black Pudding. “We’d been chatting about food, and how some of the traditional products associated with Argyll had slipped away – like the marag dhubh, or black pudding,” explains Rob.
“Whenever people from outside Scotland talk about the foods they most associate with the country, it’s always haggis that comes up. In Argyll, the marag dhubh was traditionally much more popular.”
Painstaking research into the multitude of recipes which exist for Scottish black pudding followed, and it threw up a few surprises. It was fascinating to see how different the recipes were,” says Rob. “There were some strange ingredients, but in the end, we found our recipe, and the response has been incredible.”
The two men first started selling Ardfern Black Pudding in the village hall in 2025, but have since transferred operations to a former vegetable shed on a local farm.
