- Ferry: CalMac operates ferry services between Oban, Coll and Tiree. Journey times and sailing days vary, so check the current timetable and service updates before travelling.
- Ferry Tickets: We recommend buying your tickets in advance on the CalMac website.
- Hiring Bikes: You can hire bicycles from the Post Office and e-bikes from An Cridhe community centre. Check availability and book ahead. Or bring your own bikes on the ferry. Spaces are limited, so book in advance!
- Public Transport: There is no scheduled public transport or taxi service on Coll. Private hire may be available, and visitors can explore by bike or on foot. Arrange onward transport before arriving.
- Parking: Many of Coll’s beaches involve a walk from the nearest road or parking area. Check access routes before setting out and leave gates and farm entrances clear.
- Food & Drink: Coll Stores provides everyday provisions, while The Coll Hotel and The Urchin offer places to eat and drink. Opening hours can vary seasonally, so check ahead and book meals where required.
- Toilets: Public toilets are at the ferry pier, middle pier, airport and An Cridhe community centre.
- Stay: Limited accommodation is available. We recommend booking in advance.

Coll's Dark Skies
The Isle of Coll was designated an International Dark Sky Community in 2013, recognising the island’s exceptionally dark skies and commitment to protecting them from light pollution. With no street lighting and very little artificial light, Coll is a wonderful place for stargazing. On clear, dark nights, visitors can enjoy views of the Milky Way, constellations and, at certain times of year, meteor showers.
For the best experience, plan your visit around a new moon, check the weather forecast and bring warm clothing and a torch with a red-light setting to help preserve your night vision.

Coll’s dark skies offer opportunities to see the Northern Lights when solar activity, cloud cover and visibility are favourable. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Wildlife Watching on Coll
The island’s varied habitats, ranging from sandy beaches and dunes to moorland and machair (Gaelic for low-level, grassy plains), provide sanctuary for an incredible diversity of species, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts of all kinds.
Birdwatching on Coll
Coll is home to an RSPB nature reserve at Totronald, where farmland, wetlands, machair and coastal habitats support a wide variety of birds. The reserve is particularly important for the corncrake.
In spring and summer, the machair bursts into colourful wildflowers, providing nesting grounds for ground-nesting birds like Twite, Hen Harrier and Merlin. The island is also a vital stopover and wintering area for Arctic breeders, such as Pink-footed Goose, Greenland Greater White-fronted Goose, Barnacle Goose, Great Northern Diver, Skuas, Purple Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, and Godwits.
At Totronald, visitors can find an information room, parking and suggested walking routes across the reserve. So, pack your binoculars and look up!

Coll’s coastline is dotted with beautiful sandy beaches, from wide-open bays to smaller, secluded stretches. With so many places to explore, you can discover a different part of the island’s coast each day
Curious Coastal Castles
At Breacachadh, on the west coast of Coll, you’ll find two historic castles overlooking the bay. The older castle dates from the 14th century and was once a stronghold of the Macleans of Coll, while the neighbouring newer castle reflects a later chapter in the island’s history.
Both castles are private family homes and are not open to visitors. You can appreciate their setting from public access areas, but please respect the residents’ privacy.
Water Activities
Coll’s Atlantic-facing beaches can offer surfing opportunities when conditions are suitable. Check the weather, swell and tides carefully, and only enter the water if conditions match your experience.
Wild swimming, sailing and kayaking are other popular water activities on Coll. Just be aware that most of Coll’s beaches are located a good stretch away from the nearest roads.
You can also join a guided tour around the island, from boat trips to guided kayak adventures and land-based wildlife tours – there are plenty of options!

Shopping, Restaurants & Accommodation
Coll may be remote, but its community is famously warm and welcoming. The island’s main village, Arinagour, has several places to eat and stay. The Coll Hotel offers accommodation, a bar and restaurant serving local produce, including seafood. At The Urchin, visitors can enjoy freshly prepared food, locally sourced ingredients and beers brewed on the island.
For accommodation, Coll Bunkhouse offers an alternative to traditional hotel stays, while Tigh na Mara Guesthouse offers another option for visitors who want to spend more time exploring the island.
Coll Stores sells groceries and everyday essentials, and the Post Office offers maps, gifts and local products. Opening hours can change with the seasons, so it’s worth checking arrangements and booking ahead before travelling.
For locally caught shellfish, Robertson Shellfish sells creel-caught lobster, brown crab and langoustines, with collection from the middle pier. Contact the business to check availability and arrange collection.

CalMac operates ferry services between Oban, Coll and Tiree, offering a scenic journey through the Inner Hebrides.
Sailing times, journey durations and frequency vary throughout the year. Check the latest timetable, service updates and availability before travelling, particularly if bringing a vehicle or bicycle.
Foot passengers should also book in advance and check the required arrival and check-in times. Plan your journey using the Calmac Oban - Coll - Tiree timetable.
By Plane
Hebridean Air Services also operates scheduled flights between Oban Airport at North Connel and Coll. Flights do not operate every day, and timetables vary seasonally.
Check flight availability and booking arrangements directly. Pre-booking is essential with Hebridean Air Services.
