Inveraray

Scotland's Adventure Coast

Established in 1745 by the 3rd Duke of Argyll, head of the Clan Campbell, Inveraray is the traditional county town of Argyll with stunning Georgian architecture which overlooks the water of Loch Fyne.

Inveraray Castle, the home of Clan Campbell and the current Duke of Argyll, is one of Inveraray's main attractions.

Inveraray Jail is a unique award-winning living museum, where costumed guides tell stories of former inmates and visitors can get actively involved in the experience by trying out some of the punishment methods used or experience the excitement of a trail in the courtroom.

Dun na Cuaiche watchtower sits above Loch Fyne and is known as the stone guardian of Inveraray. The viewpoint dates back to the 18th Century and provides staggering views of Loch Fyne, the town and the castle.

A trip to Inveraray isn't complete without visiting Cairndow's Ardkinglas Estate and gardens, which is home to the well-known Gruffalo Trail- perfect for families and for an educational visit to Auchindrain, a farming township, just a few miles south of the town, that has been carefully preserved to showcase true highland history and heritage.

Just a few miles south of Inveraray you will find Arrochar, a small town well-known for its Arrochar Alps and Rest & Be Thankful rest place with one of the best views in the world.

Gaelic in Scotland

The indigenous language of Argyll contains great richness of expression.  Here we have shared a phrase from local Gaelic poetry about Inveraray.

Iain MacPhàidein

Fhuair mi mo leannan am Bail’ Inbhir Aora (I found my sweetheart in Inveraray Town)
