Lying in an idyllic setting at the head of Loch Fyne, near the mouth of the River Kinglas, the village of Cairndow is set just off the A83, making it a fantastic place to stop when travelling along the scenic road from Glasgow to Inveraray.

Despite its size, it has many attractions for visitors, including the Stagecoach Inn, one of the oldest coaching inns in Scotland; the renowned Loch Fyne Oyster Bar; Fyne Ales Brewery; and the magnificent Ardkinglas Estate & Woodland Gardens.

Ardkinglas Estate includes the House, Woodland Gardens, and Gruffalo Trail, which can be found at the very south of the village and is home to a remarkable collection of trees and shrubs from various corners of the globe. Visitors can often encounter red squirrels whilst walking in the gardens. You can also stay in one of the estate's self-catering cottages.

Just over an hour from Glasgow, this picturesque village provides the perfect stopping point on your Heart of Argyll roadtrip, or a tranquil base for your weekend getaway.

Things to See & Do in Cairndow

A gem along the A83

Cairndow is a beloved stopping point for travellers exploring Argyll along the A83, considered one of Argyll's most scenic drives, and makes a fantastic stop en route to Inveraray and beyond. However, there's much reason to linger for a while!

Head on one of the many woodland walks or visit the historic Ardkinglass Estate, where hectares of land make the perfect backdrop for hours of exploration. The Woodland Garden is open all year round with an outstanding collection of plants and trees, including the "Mightiest Conifer in Europe" and the Gruffalo Trail.

Travelling with children? Stop by the Fyne Den Adventure Zone. The community hub offers a unique indoor play zone and outdoor adventure garden. Tickets can be purchased here.

In the village, you'll also find the picturesque Kilmorich Parish Church, built in 1818, which is one of only two churches in Scotland constructed in a distinctive hexagonal shape.

Just outside of Cairndow, you'll find the award-winning brewery of Fyne Ales, which offers tours and tastings in their tap room. It's a fantastic place to spend a few hours, especially on a sunny day! So is the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar & Deli, which serves the iconic Argyll oysters and a selection of fresh and smoked fish.

Plan ahead to make the most of your visit.

Style: A charming village to stop when travelling along the A83, or to make your base for a tranquil Argyll escape.
Wildlife watching: Keep eyes open for red squirrels in Ardkinglas woodlands, red deer on hillsides, and seabirds on Loch Fyne. Golden eagles occasionally soar overhead in the surrounding mountains.
Highland Games & Festival: The region is home to the historic Inveraray Games (July) and the Fyne Fest (May/June), a family-friendly music festival.
Fyne Ales tours: Check the brewery website for tour availability and timings. The Tap Room and shop have regular opening hours, but tours require advance booking.
Ardkinglas Estate: Woodland gardens are free to access year-round during daylight hours (Grufallo Trail is ticketed). Ardkinglas House itself can only be visited via a tour. House Tours are available most Fridays from April to October; booking is essential.
Local facilities: Cairndow has limited shops beyond the Loch Fyne Deli and Tree Shop. Stock up on essentials in Inveraray (8 miles south) or larger towns. Petrol and other services are available in Inveraray.
Parking: There is no public car park in Cairndow, but visitor parking is available at Ardkinglass Estate, Fyne Ales Brewery, and Loch Fyne Oyster Bar.
Toilets: You can find public toilets in Inveraray (entry charge) or at Cairndow's attractions.
Stay: Limited accommodation is available. We recommend booking in advance.

How to get to Cairndow

Planning Your Visit

By Car

Travel from Glasgow on the A82 on the west side of Loch Lomond, and then take the A83 at Tarbet, and pass through 'The Rest and Be Thankful' before reaching Cairndow. Alternatively, travel via the A85, then take the A819 past Dalmally towards Inveraray, and then join the A83 for 10 miles.

By Public Bus

Scottish Citylink operates regular coach services connecting Glasgow with Inveraray and Campbeltown, stopping at Cairndow. The journey from Glasgow takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
