Head to Argyll & the Isles this Weekend
1. Weekend Island-Hopping in Oban
The seaside town of Oban, known as the 'Seafood Capital of Scotland', is the perfect base for exploring the Inner Hebrides. From here, you can embark on day trips to the beautiful Kerrera, Lismore, Iona, Mull and Staffa. The latter is particularly famous for its Puffin population! Or head for the smaller Slate Islands (Easdale, Seil, Luing and Belnahua), so called as their slate was used in buildings across the world.
Most of these islands can be easily reached by ferry from Oban and explored on foot, by bike or by public transport. If you’re short on time and want to squeeze a lot into your weekend, consider booking the ‘Three Isle Tour’ with West Coast Tours. It takes you to Mull, Iona and Staffa within one day and includes an expert guide. Alternatively, the husband & wife team Robert & Iris of Explore Lismore offer brilliant tours around the small Isle of Lismore, including a Shepherding Experience with local shepherd Arthur and his two collies.

Where to stay during your weekend in Oban
Oban is a bustling seaside town with plenty of restaurants and accommodations to choose from. For a central place to call home, we recommend the Royal Hotel, Alltavona Guest House, Barriemore B&B, and Kintaline House. If you prefer a self-catering option, book a stay at Westbay Seafront Apartment or the luxurious Greystones.

2. A Weekend on Mull & Iona
Whereas it’s possible to visit the Isle of Mull as a day trip from Oban, we recommend spending a whole weekend on Mull. From rugged landscapes, iconic castles and abundant wildlife, this island is a haven for nature-lovers and those seeking to escape the daily hustle and bustle.
Spend a day exploring the picturesque town of Tobermory, known for its colourful waterfront and local distillery. Head to the island's North West, where a rugged coastal landscape awaits. Stop in the village of Treshnish to head on the ‘Whisky Cave Walk’, one of the finest coastal walks on the island. It’ll take you to the Whisky Cave, where the best Moonshine on Mull was once distilled. Keep your eyes open for white-tailed and golden eagles above, and whales and dolphins in the water!
The Isle of Iona is a great addition to your weekend trip to Mull. Easily reached via a short ferry from Fionnphort, southwest of Mull, this peaceful island is renowned for its spiritual significance and natural beauty. Visit the historic Iona Abbey to learn more about the unique history of Saint Columba, wander along shell-sand beaches, and immerse yourself in the island's tranquil atmosphere.
3. A Historic Weekend in Inveraray
Established in 1745 by the 3rd Duke of Argyll, head of the Clan Campbell, Inveraray is a picturesque town on Loch Fyne's shores. Spend your weekend wandering along the historic cobblestone streets, exploring the majestic Inveraray Castle, home to the current Duke of Argyll, or truly step back in time at Inveraray Jail, where costumed guides tell stories of former inmates and you can get actively involved in the experience. If you’re travelling with your family, we recommend trying their escape room experience!
A short drive from Inveraray, you’ll find Ardkinglas Estate and Woodland Gardens, home to the well-known Gruffalo & Fairy Trail and stunning woodland gardens – perfect for families and couples alike!
After a day of sightseeing, savour fresh seafood at Loch Fyne Oysters Bar & Deli or enjoy a hearty meal at The George Hotel, known for its warm hospitality and traditional Scottish fare. Make sure to try a pint of one of Fyne Ale’s local brews, distilled only a few miles outside of Inveraray!
4. Explore Kilmartin Glen & Knapdale
Kilmartin Glen is one of Scotland's most significant prehistoric sites, boasting over 350 ancient monuments within a six-mile radius. Spend a day walking around the grounds, marvelling at standing stones, chambered cairns, and stone circles that date back thousands of years. Visit the Kilmartin Museum to learn more about the area's rich archaeological heritage, or hike to Dunadd Fort, the ancient seat of the kings of Dál Riata, for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Beyond the glen, you will find Knapdale, a place of rugged hills, empty beaches and ancient woodlands. This area is a dream for cyclists and walkers with a wealth of scenic, way-marked trails for all abilities. A must-visit whilst exploring this historic area is Knapdale Forest, where beavers have been reintroduced into Scotland. Play beaver detective for the day whilst walking along the Scottish Beaver Trail – guaranteed fun for all ages!

5. A Tranquil Escape to the Isle of Gigha
Just three miles off the Kintyre Peninsula, the Isle of Gigha is a beautiful destination for those seeking to unplug, relax and recharge. Just seven miles long by a mile and a half wide, the island is easily explored by bike, foot or kayak, making it a perfect weekend break. Spend a few days exploring Gigha’s white-sand beaches, archaeological sites and beautiful gardens. After a day of exploring, pop into one of the island’s eateries to indulge in delicious local produce before retreating to your cosy accommodation – make sure to look up at night to marvel at the stunning night sky!

6. A Road Trip along the K66
Embark on the Kintyre 66, a 66-mile circular road trip that showcases the best of the Kintyre Peninsula. Along the way, discover ancient castles, spot local wildlife, or experience Campbeltown's rich whisky heritage. Fancy getting a little more active? Head to Westport beach for a surf or wild swim amidst stunning, rugged coastal scenery, or spend a day walking a leg of the famous Kintyre Way.
Stay at Torrisdale Castle, home of Beinn an Tuirc Distillers and award-winning spirits such as Kintyre Gin, to wake up to stunning sea views or get cosy at a cottage in the grounds of Killean Estate.
Beautiful Westport Beach is also an excellent coastal walk.
7. A Victorian Weekend on the Isle of Bute
Easily reached by ferry, the Isle of Bute has been a popular weekend destination for Glaswegians since the Victorian era. Arrive with the ferry into the Victorian seaside town of Rothesay, where you can browse an array of artisan shops, visit Rothesay Castle and enjoy one of many eateries, such as the 51st State & La Cantina. One of our favourite stops is the Isle of Bute Coffee Company, located inside the quirky gift shop Bonnie Bling!
Continue your weekend adventure with a visit to Mount Stuart, an opulent historic house built in 1719 with over 300 acres of stunning gardens. There’s plenty to discover inside and outside Mount Stuart, so leave enough time to soak it all in properly. You can also spend your weekend in one of Mount Stuart's self-catering cottages.
If you’d like to be more adventurous, why not bring your bikes or rent e-bikes at Bike Bute to cycle around the island? Explore at your own pace, stopping at sights such as standing stones, Bute Community Forest or the beautiful beach of Ettrick's Bay. Alternatively, you could also take a scenic boat tour around Bute, spotting seals and porpoises with Bute Boat Tours.

8. Explore Argyll’s Secret Coast
Argyll’s Secret Coast describes the region of the Cowal Peninsula, which is easily accessible via car and ferry from Glasgow. Start your weekend by exploring Dunoon's rich history and bustling centre before heading towards the charming village of Tighnabruaich. You can expect tranquil beaches, artisan eateries and a thriving art scene here. Make sure to pop by the Hayshed Gallery and the adjoining Argyll Coffee Cafe!

Helensburgh is a charming Victorian seaside town that serves as a gateway to the Clyde Sea Lochs and several renowned walking trails, including the John Muir Way and the Three Lochs Way. You can reach it easily via train from Glasgow, so why not leave the car behind for the weekend?
Spend your weekend exploring the nearby Rosneath Peninsula, visiting the Hill House designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, or simply enjoying the town's vibrant café culture and boutique shops.
